Josef Polák’s Jubilee
Abstract
The short contribution marks the ninetieth birthday of the Czech mathematician, university teacher, and mathematics educator Josef Polák. It briefly outlines his studies in mathematics and physics education, his early career as a secondary-school teacher, and his long-standing academic work at the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and later the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. His involvement in organising the Mathematical Olympiad and his research activities, including applications of mathematics to electromagnetic field theory, are also mentioned. Particular attention is paid to his extensive publication record, especially the repeatedly published Survey of Secondary-School Mathematics and his three-volume work on mathematics education. The article highlights Polák’s lasting contribution to mathematics education and recalls his numerous contributions to MFI.
