Abstract

Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius was one of the leading German physicists of the 19th century. In his youth, his interest in history outweighed his interest in the applications of mathematics, which led him to study optical and thermal phenomena. In the middle of the 19th century, he contributed to the emergence of thermodynamics as a theoretical discipline and its application to general macroscopic processes.
