Abstract

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the use of the software Wolfram Alpha in mathematics tuition at the secondary level. Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine developed by Wolfram Research based on the software Mathematica. It is an online service whose aim is to make all the systematic knowledge accessible. The basic version is free; some more advanced applications are chargeable. A use of Wolfram Alpha constitutes an alternative to commercial mathematical software such Matlab, Mathematica or Derive. In secondary level tuition, Wolfram Alpha can be used for analysis of functions, solution of equalities, inequalities and their systems, matrix operations, determinant calculation, etc. Nevertheless, Wolfram Alpha is not limited to mathematics; it can be used in other sciences such as chemistry, biology, geography or physics.
