Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the possibilities of the use of concrete materials in the form of worksheets for teaching mathematical literacy at secondary schools. The materials focus on practical applications of maths in real situations and therefore stretch far into other disciplines. Hence they may help teachers to implement the interdisciplinary approach in their math lessons.
The author gives one example of the worksheet "Absolute and Relative Change – Changes of Climate" together with a detailed description of the lesson, recommendations, analysis, feedback and results. Other worksheets are available through references on the Internet.

This article tries to give the teachers practical direction how they can include mathematical literacy in their lessons and thus help their students understand the usefulness and significance of mathematics. There are two attachments to the article (see the link between the Article tools in the right column).
