Abstract

Variables play a vital role in most programming languages - they insert values in specific places in expressions, store temporary results, and last but not least, indicate function arguments. The article presents the functional language Joy, where the concept of a variable does not exist and which can provide an unconventional introduction to the increasingly popular techniques of functional programming.
