Abstract

We describe two stories that link the main ideas and the stock market environment, although they are separated by more than 170 years. The common denominator is the enrichment of a small group of people based on faster access to information. The first story is related to the French visual telegraph network and is closely linked to the first very well-documented virus on the network. The second story is related to high-frequency trading and describes how several billion US dollars were made by building a new data line that was several milliseconds faster than the existing ones. Both stories are interesting and contain lessons that will be appreciated by any computer science teacher interested in making their teaching more attractive.
