Abstract

In the 19th century, William Thomson (better known by his noble name as Lord Kelvin, Baron of Largs) was one of Europe's most important mathematicians and scientists. His talent and interest in mathematics, physics and philosophy were so strong from an early age that he began studying at Glasgow University at the age of ten. During his lifetime he wrote 661 publications and applied for seventy patents. The joy of discovery led him to inventions that pushed the boundaries of human knowledge in low-temperature physics, thermodynamics, atmospheric electricity and the transmission of electricity (via undersea cables).
