Abstract

Descartes circle theorem describes the relationship among the circles radii of four circles touching each other. From correspondence René Descartes and princess Elizabeth of Bohemia is known, that the theorem resulted from attempts to find algebraic solutions of Apollonius's problem. It is not known, how did Descartes derive it. The article analyzes their correspondence and shows, how could Descartes derive his relationship by the Elisabeth's supposed method.
