Abstract

The paper provides a brief introduction to information theory developed by American mathematician C. Shannon. It explains two basic concepts of information theory, particularly, surprise measure and average information (entropy). Moreover, it shows how to use these concepts to construct optimal prefix coding called Huffman code.
