Abstract

Planimeter, which is based on the transformation of the measured figure from polygon to a triangle of the same area, was invented in the 19th century and a lot of sources erroneously state that its first discoverer was Charles Gangloff.

The article introduces planimeter constructions, methods of its applications, two proofs of correctness of the measurement procedure and history of its discovery. In conclusion is given how to make planimeter self-help and a methodical instruction for working with planimeter or its computer version in hobby mathematics.
