Abstract

The concept of distance is fundamentally important in the context of mathematics and science. The aim of this article is to show its importance in elementary geometry. The first part mentions some Czech textbooks  and historical aspects  of this problem (Euclid, Hilbert, Birkhoff). After the distance function or metric was introduced in 1906, the concept distance as a primitive term was developed through geometrical axiomatics (Choquet, Pogorelov, Krygowska).
